Prior to both the northern and western bypasses being built there was a T Junction here, where the A15 ran North to South, while the A17 came in from the west and would run down South with the A15 into Sleaford where it would head out East again.
In 1975 the A17 North bypass of Sleaford was completed, this is when the roundabout was first constructed with the A15 on the North and South arms while the A17 was on the East and West arms. Although this wasn't the end of the A17 upgrades, it was the end of the A17 dual carriageway. The roundabout was constructed in a kind of pentagon in preparation of the A15 Western bypass to come 21 years later. It was also quite a large roundabout, potentially for a GSJ upgrade in the future.
In 1996 the Western bypass of the A15 was completed. This joined onto the roundabout in the South Western corner.
In 2019 plans were released by Lincolnshire Council to upgrade this roundabout and Sleaford Rugby Club Junction due to congestion. Funding for both junctions is £5 Million. Improvements and Holdingham roundabout are:
- Additional lanes at each approach
- Traffic signals installed at some approaches
These improvements are due to be done between July and December 2020
