Holyport Interchange is Junction 8/9 of the M4.
It is a simple roundabout interchange with the A404(M) (the rump part of the Maidenhead Bypass) and the A308(M) (a link to the A308) both terminating here. It opened on 22 December 1971.
This junction is unique as it is the only one in the UK to have two numbers, 8/9. This is because when it was built, the original junction 8 with the A308 was removed as the distance between the two junctions was insufficient. Junction 9 was at the end of the now A404(M), which was previously part of the M4. When this junction opened, J9 was numbered 9b, while the new junction took both original numbers.
Under plans to widen the M4 in the 1990s, the Highways Agency spoke of "lower level improvements" planned for this interchange, which would involve purchasing land to the south. That plan was eventually dropped, and due to congestion at this junction, the sliproads were widened in around 2007.
Under one plan for Maidenhead services, it would have been to the south of the junction, accessed from it.
