Huntingdonshire is a traditional county in the east of England. The county council was abolished in 1965; it was briefly administered by the County of Huntingdon and Peterborough but is now split between Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Geography & Economy

Kimbolton

Huntingdonshire is one of the smaller English counties and is largely rural, although it does merge into the Peterborough urban area in the north. The only other places of any size are the county town of Huntingdon and St Neots, further south on the A1. St Ives is mentioned in the nursery rhyme in which the narrator meets a man with seven wives. Much of the county is low-lying: the River Great Ouse runs across the centre whilst the north is in the Fens; the county contains the most low-lying point in the country on Holme Fen. The county is known for Stilton cheese, although legally this may not be made in Huntingdonshire; it was named after the village is was sold in.

Roads

A1(M)

The south of Huntingdonshire has a good road network, mostly radiating from Huntingdon; the A428 is the main exception. Peterborough is also well-served. However, fewer roads cross the Fens and those that do often have their routes chosen for them by the watercourses. Most non-trunk roads in the county are maintained by Cambridgeshire County Council, whilst a number in the north are maintained by Peterborough City Council. National Highways maintain the north-south A1/A1(M) and east-west A14 and A428. The A1(M) in Huntingdonshire is one of the most over-engineered sections of road in the country, being D4M with a local access road alongside. The A14 (former A604) has replaced the A45 (now B645/A428) as the main east-west route in the area due to poor quality sections on the latter.
