Hylton Grange Interchange is a junction on the A19 Sunderland bypass, where it is crossed by the A1231 which functions as the main access into the city from the north. The A1231 is also used to access the new town of Washington as well as providing a high quality link between the A19 and the A1.
History
The junction was part of the Sunderland Bypass. It opened initially with the northern section from Testos Roundabout on 20 March 1972. The section southwards over Hylton Viaduct did not open until 30 September 1974.
The eastern section of the Washington to Sunderland "Washington Cross Route" was to be opened on 18 December 1972. The westwards section was later.
The junction is a traffic light controlled roundabout interchange. Work was completed in 2015 to widen the approach on the eastbound A1231 to three lanes in order to reduce congestion.
