Aside from Pitreavie Roundabout, King Malcolm Roundabout is the largest roundabout met by the A823 as it works its way through Dunfermline. This is odd, as on the face of it the side roads are only local access routes for the suburb of Pitreavie and its business park. However, travel west along Grange Drive a short distance into the business park and you will find why the roundabout was built so big. Grange Drive itself is dualled, and it is clear that it was intended to be something bigger, as it now ends abruptly at a sharp bend, with a stub continuing west now in use for recycling bins and a burger van! The ultimate destination of this planned road is not clear, but it seems likely it would have connected to the B9156 to the west, and so the A985.

Back to the roundabout, and the A823 is also dualled north and south of the junction, while little Laburnum Road to the east is just S2.
