Kirkintilloch is a large town on the River Kelvin north of Glasgow. It sits astride the Forth and Clyde Canal, which loosely follows the line of the Roman Antonine Wall at this point. The town later developed as a small market town on one of the main routes north east from Glasgow, before growing rapidly after the war as former slum tennants were moved out of the city into new housing. Today there is a large industrial zone to the north of the town, but its easy access to Glasgow, particularly with the completion of the new link road, also means that it and neighbouring Lenzie are prime commuter territory. The town is now also the administrative centre for East Dunbartonshire Council.
The A803 is the main road past Kirkintilloch, although it has always passed to the north of the centre, on the sort-of bypass. The, presumably, original main road through the town centre was previously the B820, but has long been unclassified. The other A road through Kirkintilloch is the A806, which is a route that took many years to be fully complete. Started as a relief road passing the town centre and giving better access to the south of the town from the A803, it was finally extended through to the M80 at the same time that the motorway was finished. It is therefore an unusual road, as part of it follows a former railway line, and the southern end connecting to the A80 is the former M80 motorway!
Before completion, the A806 was the A8006, which terminated at a roundabout junction with the B757 and B8048. The former headed south west through Lenzie to meet the M80, but now reconnects with the A806, whilst the latter has always headed east to Cumbernauld. The B757 also continued north from Kirkintilloch, to Milton of Campsie, although it no longer extends south, so it is entirely out of zone. Two other B roads exist near Kirkintilloch. The B819 runs across the southern edge of Lenzie, and the B8023 follows the canal eastwards to Kilsyth.
