Approaching from the south

The Laurencecroft Roundabout in Stirling was built relatively recently to connect Back O'Hill Road to Drip Road, so allowing the A84 to be re-routed away from Raploch. The two roads were on slightly different levels, which means that the old Raploch road climbs as it turns to meet the roundabout. The gap between the two roads had previously been filled by the railway line west from Stirling to Balloch on Loch Lomond, but it still took nearly half a century after the lines closure to connect the two roads.

The A84 is the only classified road at the junction, and passes across from east to west. The northern arm is Drip Road, the former A84 route through Raploch, whilst the southern arm is the old start of Back O'Hill Road, leading out of the city centre. This means that the A84 now crosses from Drip Road as it comes out of the city centre to join the Back O'Hill Road which follows the base of the castle rock to meet the western Ring Road. Just after passing through the roundabout, the A84 also passes through traffic lights at the entrance to the Sainsburys Store, which was built at a similar time to the roundabout.

Since the diversion of the A84, Raploch has been completely redeveloped with shared spaces and traffic calming galore. This means that whilst it is the shorter route out of the city, it is now much slower. Along with changes to the road, Raploch has also seen new buildings, including a new college complex, community centre and a lot of housing which have revitalised what was a run-down part of the city, blighted by the busy main road.
