Definition of Useless Multiplex

These numbers, on paper, make sense even though the title suggests otherwise. They are created when a length of road is shared by two or more numbers (multiplexed) but the dominant route (i.e. the signposted route) terminates during the multiplex.

The best known example of this is on the A303 where the A30 multiplexes east of Bullington Cross. However, traffic is following the A303 to the M3, so a short length signed as A30 would remove route consistency. The A30 continues from the start of the M3 spur to Junction 8, leaving the A303 behind entirely.
