The Llywel Mountain Road is an unclassified road running along the western edge of the Brecon Beacons in Brecknockshire. It was built by the Ministry of Defence and is frequently closed when military exercises are carried out in the neighbouring Sennybridge Training Area.
The southern section of the road has a 1 in 7 hill. In order to provide suitable access for armoured vehicles, the MOD widened this part of the road so vehicles could travel on separate lanes. The road is therefore an interesting anachronism in traffic law, as it legally meets the definition of a dual carriageway road and it is legally possible to drive it at 70mph. This is probably foolhardy due to the road's popularity with cyclists and the real possibility of meeting an armoured vehicle. Further north the road has more sensible limits of 20 and 30mph.
