Whilst never a classified route, Westerleigh Road was deemed to be sufficiently important to become the only pre-existing unclassified road to be provided with a junction between the M32 and A4 when the A4174 Avon Ring Road was built. It provides access to Mangotsfield and Emerson's Green to the south. To the north, it has been dualled for a short section to provide access to the new industrial estate that has been developed in the thin wedge of land between the Ring Road and M4. This is now home to a large Sainsbury's Distribution centre amongst other important local employers.
