Operation Stack was a temporary traffic arrangement that was put in place numerous times between 1998 and 2018 which was aimed at managing queues to the channel ports. Operation Stack essentially closed the M20 coastbound carriageway so that HGVs could be queued, awaiting availaibility of crossings to the continent. Owing to an increasingly devestating impact upon the local road network, it was retired in 2018 and replaced with Operation Brock.
