Junction 9 of the M20 was originally built in 1981, with provision for the motorway to continue towards Maidstone and London, which was eventually completed in 1991.
Originally it had a dual carriageway link to the Repton Park Roundabout, where it met the A20, the A28 (taking over the old Ashford Bypass) and the A292. The link road to the A251 at Eastwell Manor was built in stages between 1997 and 2002, and upon completion became a rerouted A251.
The eastern section of Operation Stack was at junction 9, and is now part of Operation Brock.
