M23, M25

The Merstham Interchange is the junction between the M25 (for which it is junction 7), and the M23 (for which it is junction 8). It is one of three four-level stacks in the country.

Due to the failed portions of the ringway plans, this junction is only a mile south of the 'temporary' terminus of the M23, the Hooley Interchange. Consequently, very little traffic heads north from here.

History

Since the full opening of the junction in 1975 there has been some small alterations of the junction, mostly in the lanes.

Original Design

What the likely original design *may* of been in 1975.

  • M25 Clockwise - 3 lanes to 5 lanes at diverse, L1 to M23S, L2 to M23N, L3/4/5 to M25CW. 2 Lanes merge, 1 gained (4 total)
  • M25 Anti-Clockwise - 4 lanes to 5 lanes at diverse (1 loss), L1 to M23N, L2 to M23S, L3/4/5 to M25ACW. 2 Lanes merge, 1 loss (3 total)
  • M23 Northbound - 3 lanes to 5 at diverse, L1 to M25CW, L2 to M25ACW, L3/4/5 to M23N. 2 Lanes merge, 1 gain (4 total)
  • M23 Southbound - 4 lanes to 5 at diverse, L1 to M25AWC, L2 to M25CW, L3/4/5 to M23S. 2 Lanes merge, 1 loss (3 total)

2000

What the design was in 2000

  • M25 Clockwise - 3 lanes to 6 lanes at diverse, L1/2 to M23S, L3 to M23N, L4/5/6 to M25CW. 2 Lanes merge, 1 gained (4 total)
  • M25 Anti-Clockwise - 4 lanes to 5 lanes at diverse (1 loss), L1/2 to M23S (L1 can then turn off onto M23N), L3/4/5 to M25ACW. 2 Lanes merge, 1 loss (3 total)
  • M23 Northbound - 3 lanes to 4 at diverse, L1 to M25CW, L2 to M25ACW, L3/4 to M23N. 1 Lane gain between off/on slips. 2 Lanes merge, 1 gain (4 total)
  • M23 Southbound - 4 lanes to 4 at diverse, L1 to M25AWC, L2 to M25CW, L3/4 to M23S. 2 Lanes merge, 1 loss (3 total)

2020 Smart Motorway

The (proposed) changes made to the junction during the M23 (J8 - J10) Smart Motorway Upgrade

  • M25 Clockwise - unknown, no changes likely made
  • M25 Anticlockwise - unknown, no changes likely made
  • M23 Northbound - 4 lanes to 6 at diverse, L1/2 to M25CW, L3/4 to M25ACW, L5/6 to M23N. 2 Lanes merge, 0 gain (4 total)
  • M23 Southbound - 4 lanes to 4 at diverse, L1 to M25ACW, L2 to M25CW, L3/4 to M23S. 2 (or 3?) Lanes Merge, 0 gain (4 total)
