Lower Ashley Road Interchange is Junction 3 of the M32.
History
The junction was planned as a connection between the M32 and the unbuilt Outer Circuit Road. Until the late 1960s the junction was designed to have the M32 passing over the roundabout and continuing southwards to Cabot Circus. The Outer Circuit Road would have joined the roundabout at-grade.
From the late 1960s onwards the plan had changed so the junction would be built on three levels. The M32 would now pass beneath the roundabout and the Outer Circuit Road would pass over the roundabout uninterrupted. By the time the junction was built in the 1970s the idea of completing the Outer Circuit Road had been abandoned and the flyover was never built. The final section of the M32 towards Cabot Circus was built as the downgraded Newfoundland Way rather than a motorway.
