This article is about junction 9 of the M62.

.

Stump Cross is junction 9 of the M62. It opened in 1973.

It is a signalised roundabout with three lanes practically all the way around, and two lane motorway slip-roads. It serves as the main access point for Warrington to the M62 as well as the A49 dual carriageway's crossing over the M62 into the historic village of Winwick to the North of the town. (As Newton Road, though often referred to by the further Southerly and Northerly name Winwick Road.)

This junction is not to be confused with the Winwick Interchange, which is reached if you follow the A49 dual carriageway up past the traffic light junction for Delph Lane (B&Q and Burger King), third exit on the (signalised) Winwick Park Roundabout and along the Winwick Link Road spur, connecting the M6 and A579 on a similar but non-signalised roundabout.

It seems apparent that as a result of the placement of this junction, the A50's route through Orford (area of Warrington) was shifted South onto Orford Green and Long Lane, terminating at what was the Longford Roundabout, instead of its smoother previous route up Poplars Avenue onto Newton Road (A49), just South of where Stump Cross lies at present. The connection of Poplars Avenue to Newton Road has also been severed by disconnecting the road at the top of Cotswold Road, and providing only Southbound access to the A49 from the remaining Westerly section.
