This junction opened with the original M62 in 1960, and was a very low standard interchange with steep ramps and single lane slip roads. It is believed to have been numbered junction 2 for a short period from the late 1960s. In 1971, the M62 was renumbered to M63 and this became junction 5. A gap in numbering had been left for the unbuilt M60 Knutsford-Manchester corridor as the nearby A56 interchange was numbered 7.

Whilst the Stretford-Eccles bypass was widened and just before construction of the Carrington Spur (A6144(M)) in 1987, this junction was closed to traffic. Traffic wishing to join the motorway was diverted to Lostock Circle to the north. J5 was closed and J6 appeared on maps, leaving a gap in numbering once more.

In 1998 the M63 became the M60 and the gap in junction numbers was fixed.
