Abbey Way Gyratory is commonly described as a magic roundabout, but in practice it is more of a magic gyratory: different sections are built to different standards, some of the roundabouts are rather large, and the whole junction is never shown on one sign.

The junction was built in the 1970s, with Abbey Way. It replaced the end of Queen Victoria Road, which ran along the north side after crossing Queen Victoria Bridge. St Mary Street was also significantly curtailed during its construction, although it has now been given a new route over the River Wye.

When it was first built, the junction operated as a standard roundabout. Its conversion to a two-way, 'magic', arrangement happened in the 1990s.
