Originally a simple roundabout to the south of Bedford, where the southern bypass terminated on the old road, this junction has seen lots of changes in recent years, first of all becoming a hamburger (with the A421 being the through route), then the opening of the Bedford Western bypass (A428) in December 2009, and grade-separation of the A421 in late 2010. In 2013, A6 traffic was routed via the Western bypass, and thus through this junction, however it is barely signed here.
