The northern junction between the A944 and A97 lies a little to the north of Mossat Shop, the once legendary store which appears to have sold everything imaginable is now a 'humble' Antiques shop, but its name lives on with the locals. In the days before Sunday shopping was commonplace it became a popular destination for Sunday drives out from Aberdeen and other towns, and there were usually cars parked all along the verges nearby. In 1982 it was celebrated by North-East comedy trio Scotland the What?
"Turn right, then left, past Alford,
Go on five miles, then stop.
The crowds of folk will tell you
That you've found the Mossat Shop."
The shop, probably starting life as an ordinary rural store, served a wide rural area of farms between forestry plantations on the higher slopes. The scenic Strathdon lies to the south, whilst Alford is also a tourist destination, so the shop served a wide range of customers. The junction is a simple T junction, with the A944 and A97 multiplexing to the south past the shop and on through Kildrummy. The A97 continues north, despite the TOTSO - the shared arm meets the give way line - eventually reaching the Moray Firth Coast, whilst the A944 heads east to Alford, and eventually Aberdeen.
