Mounthooly Roundabout

Mounthooly Roundabout is a major roundabout close to Aberdeen city centre. It marks the eastern end of the A944, where it terminates on the A96, with the B990 continuing to the east, making the short connection to the A956. The island is an unusual, squashed pentagon shape with two circulatory lanes around most of it, although only one past the A944. Each of the three main approaches are dualled, with two approach and departure lanes, The B990 and unclassified Gallowgate are single carriageway, with only the B990 approach being marked as two lanes. A single pedestrian subway route curves through the parkland from the north east to south west flanks of the roundabout, although each arm except Gallogate is also provided with pedestrian crossings.

The roundabout was built after the whole area was cleared during 1970s redevelopment to create what was claimed at the time to be the largest urban roundabout in Europe. OS mapping from the 1950s shows the A946 (now the A96) maintaining a straight course through the junction, with the various side roads meeting as T junctions, and a skewed crossroads between the B990, Mounthooly and Gallowgate. By the late 1960s, a small roundabout seems to have been provided for this former crossroads, including Nelson Street which was still the B990 at the time. Further redevelopment occurred later, creating the large junction that now exists on the site. This has seen Nelson Street removed from the main junction, and turned into a one-way street leading off the A96 in the short distance between the roundabout and pedestrian crossing.
