Muckle Roe Bridge spans the narrow Roe Sound which separates the island of Muckle Roe from Shetland Mainland. The sound was first crossed in 1905 by a multi-span structure of iron and concrete. It was subsequently rebuilt in 1947 to provide a wider roadway, while the current 2-span structure was opened in 1999. The current bridge has a concrete deck supported by steel girders. This carries a single lane roadway with wide pavements to either side - indeed wide enough that two cars could easily pass if they bumped up the kerbs! Metal railing act as parapets and there are small parking areas / viewpoints on either shore. The layby on Muckle Roe is home to the datestones / plaques for both the current bridge and its predecessor.
