The Muirhead - Braehead Interchange is a complex pair of interlinked junctions on the A8011 dual carriageway through Cumbernauld, which mirrors Langlands - Seafar Interchange further west. The junctions are first shown on large scale maps from 1967 in their current format, and are at least partially complete on the 1966 edition of the OS One Inch sheet. To simplify matters, the junction can be split into two, Braehead Roundabout to the east and Muirhead Interchange to the west.

Braehead Roundabout

Braehead Roundabout is a Roundabout Interchange above the A8011. It connects three of the suburban distributor roads together, namely Seafar Road to the west, Kildrum Road to the north east and North Carbrain Road which turns round to the south west to run parallel to the A8011. Each of these five approaches has two turning lanes, and while unlined there are two circulatory lanes. The west facing slips are intertwined with those of Muirhead Interchange, the offslip curving around past that junction, and providing a direct link as well, while the onslip to the A8011 has a very short and wide weaving area alongside the main carriageway.

Muirhead Interchange

Muirhead Interchange lies immediately to the west of Brahead Roundabout and is in the form of a squashed trumpet, connecting the northern end of the B8054 onto the A8011. As noted above, the loops on the northern side of the A8011 are squashed, partly to accommodate the eastbound offslip to Brahead, which has a connection across from the B8054. The two sliproads on the south side of the A8011 also curve tightly before a long section parallel to the A8011, the offslip having a short, wide weaving section with the onslip for Braehead. The B8054 to the south is dualled, and almost immediately has south facing slips connecting to North Carbrain Road, which itself links back to Braehead. A short distance further again it meets the South Carbrian Road at Kildrum South Interchange.
