The town of New Pitsligo lies in northeast Aberdeenshire and has changed little in the last half century. Less than a mile to the north, however, the junction between the A98 and the A950 has changed quite considerably. For centuries the main route had been heading west from New Pitsligo towards Macduff and Banff. This layout persisted after the roads were numbered in 1922, giving the A98 a TOTSO. Much more recently, however, the junction has been realigned and the sweeping bend of the old through route has gone. Instead, the A98 has been straightened a little with the A950 turned to meet it at right angles. Room has also been made for a right turn lane in the centre of the A98.
