North Bridge carried the A1 (later A19) and A638 over the East Coast Mainline and Doncaster Canal on an S4 bridge. It was a frequent traffic blackspot not helped by the amount of repairs it needed, and it was eventually bypassed by St Georges Bridge in 2002, which is also known locally as 'North Bridge'.
Initially the old bridge was closed for major repairs, it was then opened to pedestrians and now buses. There have been talks about opening it to relieve traffic congestion. The roundabout where it met the A630 wasn't completely removed until 2004, as part of the work to extend the Frenchgate Shopping Centre.
