Junctions related to the A286

Northgate Gyratory is a Gyratory on the Chichester's inner city Ring Road (A286) which is located just outside of the old city walls. It has five main arms, as well as several access off on the inside and outside. This gyratory is noticeable due to a cycle lane around the entire outside of the gyratory, however this is of poor quality due to having to give way to most exits of the Gyratory. The inside of the Gyratory is also home to Chichester's Fire and Rescue service.

History

1922

Early maps show the A286 heading North to south through Northgate as "North Street" within the city walls and "Broyle Road" to the North. Northgate (the street) to the West which splits into St Pauls Road & Orchard Street and Franklin Place to the East at a staggered crossroads.

Late 1920s

In the Late 1920s a new route, the B2178 was created, this followed "Northgate" then "St Pauls Road". It terminated at Northgate.

1963s

In 1963 the B2178 was extended East from Northgate via Franklin Place

1970s

In the 1970s the Ring Road was created, this involved the A286 Was diverted around the ring road in both directions. So the A286 made up the North, East and West arms. At the same time the gyratory was created, unitizing existing roads except to the north where "Churchside" was created. All arms remained the same as the original roads except Franklin Place which was rebuilt as a D2 with a subway, the original Franklin Place became a service road to access properties. It is unclear if the cycle lane was part of the original built, or created later since the circularly was wide enough for three lanes of traffic and was reduced to two. Cycle Lane is prior to 2001.

2005

Cycle lane had painted buffers put in.

2020

In 2020 as a response to covid-19, a temporary cycleway was setup along some of the ring road reducing the D2 sections to D1 and lowing the speed limit to 20 MPH. There were some changes to the Layout at Northgate Gyratory such as reflective cylinders installed along the buffer of the cycle lane and reduced entry and exit lanes, although these were removed after a few months.
