Layout of the original proposals

Norton Canes services is unique in the UK in that it is only accessible from a toll road.

The original proposal by Midland Expressway was for separate services on each carriageway. These would have been located about a mile to the east of where the services were eventually built. They would have been offset with the eastbound services being located where M6 Toll J6 is. The slip roads for this junction are in almost the same location as those for the planned services. The local road network would also have been built differently.
