Old Craighall Junction is a grade-separated interchange between the A1 and the A720 City of Edinburgh Bypass some five and a half miles east-south-east of Edinburgh city centre. As well as being the eastern terminus of the A720, the junction marks the point at which the trunk road section of the A1 – which began 376 miles away, at Borehamwood Interchange – comes to an end.
The A1 mainline, running east-west at this point, passes straight over the interchange, with sliproad connections to the roundabout below, the south side of which serves the A720 while to the north, a short spur of the B6415 curves to the left to provide access to the B6415 proper, linking local destinations Millerhill and Musselburgh. There are services on this spur, although they are limited to a Travelodge hotel and a BP filling station.
The interchange was added to the Musselburgh bypass when the Sheriffhall to Old Craighill section of the A720 was opened in 1988. In June 2019, a £1.5m signalisation scheme was completed, aimed at improving safety and peak traffic flows at the interchange.
