The new bridge

Old Laxey Bridge carries the B1 over the Laxey River near the harbour in Laxey. The current bridge was built in 2017 to replace its predecessor, which was washed away in a flood on 3rd December 2015. The bridge comprises a single span concrete deck supported by steel girders, and is wider than its predecessor, offering pavements as well as the two-way roadway. The single span was designed to accommodate a flood larger than that which washed the old bridge away. On the downstream side, there is a triangular, cantilevered projection supporting a mast structure and giving information on the history of the bridge.

Old Bridge

The previous bridge was an old stone structure with two arches, which carried a standard S2 carriageway, but no pavements. The central pier stood in the river bed, and had a substantial cutwater on the upstream face, but otherwise the bridge was very plain, built from small rubble stonework. Despite having a more or less level roadway, the parapet on the downstream side had a humped profile, being noticeably taller over the pier. On the upstream side, the parapet had been removed and replaced with metal railings. This appears to have been primarily to accommodate the turning traffic on the north side of the bridge, where a squint girder had been installed between the bridge and riverbank to provide a better curvature for the road.
