Orange Street Roundabout forms a major gateway to Halifax town centre for traffic using the A58 and the A629. It opened in 1973 as part of Burdock Way, and forms an unfinished grade-separated junction. Originally, the A629 to the north was still the original road via Corporation Street; it was not bypassed by Ovenden Road until 1976.
The roundabout was signalised as part of an experimental scheme in the early 1990s as traffic volumes rose. This included the provision of a free-flow lane between the A58 eastbound and A629 northbound.
In July 2011, the roundabout was widened to provide additional circulatory lanes and a 'spiral' arrangement as part of the wider improvements to the northern parts of the town centre brought about by the Broad Street Plaza development. Improved signing, lighting, and road markings were placed on the roundabout and its approaches, at a cost of £1.5 million.
