Derby Spur
The Derby spur would have been a spur off the M64 running from the motorway near Chellaston to the Mitre Island in Allenton. This route was chosen as it would give easy access to the industrial areas of Sinfin.
When the M64 was axed, there was almost immediately talk of building the whole stretch as an all purpose road- namely the A50- and with this the Derby Spur (from here called Chellasaton Spur to avoid confusion) lived on until at least 1983 (in a watered down guise- part dual and part single carriageway) At this stage though the Chellaston Spur was not the only one under consideration- an alternative, which is what was eventually built, was talked about, based on earlier plans for an Alvaston bypass (This Spur will be called Alvaston Spur from here). The Alvaston spur was eventually built as part of the Derby Southern Bypass on the A50, and the Chellaston Spur was not. One reason for this could be that the Chellaston Spur involved the demolition of around 90 houses in Allenton, in order to connect to the A5111 and A514 at the Mitre Island.
The Alvaston Spur though, has not been as successful as planned. The A514 is still one of Derby's busiest radial roads and is congested at peak hours- even today plans are still in the air for a (presumably single carriageway) link road, along a similar line to the proposed spur, between the Bonnie Prince Roundabout and Wilmore Road (near to Rolls-Royce) and Holmleigh Way in Chellaston was built as the first part of this link. The proposed road would not however bypass Chellaston effectively as much traffic using the A514 is using the road to reach the city centre, and the plans include no route there from Wilmore Road.
