Crossings related to the A816 | |||
The Oude Bridge spans the Oude River above the Oude Dam, and is a well-known landmark to regular travellers along the A816, as it is a narrow crossing on a relatively tight double-bend in an otherwise open glen. What makes it worse for traffic is that the bridge appears to be a modern concrete structure, albeit spanning between older stone abutments, partially encased in concrete. It was perhaps the re-use of the original foundations that forced the current design when a less skewed and wider crossing would be more beneficial to all.
The precise age of the bridge is not known, but it seems likely that it was constructed as part of the improvement and realignment of the A816 when the River Oude was dammed in c1956.
