Oxgang Bridge over the Luggie Water

Oxgang Bridge carries the B8048, Waterside Road, across the Luggie Water in Kirkintilloch. The bridge is built to an unusually sharp skew, especially considering the narrower width of the river channel below. It looks to be an older girder bridge carrying a concrete deck and spanning between concrete abutments, but mapping evidence suggests it was built between 1972 and 1974. The deck carries a wide S2 carriageway between wide pavements, which provides enough space to widen the road for the approach to the roundabout on the eastern bank of the river; however this has not been done. The bridge replaces an older crossing which once stood a short distance downstream, the old south abutment standing next to the current one, with the bridge then spanning the river at right angles, so meeting Redbrae Road approximately where the railings start. The river banks are now planted with trees and shrubs, and the north bank of the river has been turned in to a small park, making it almost impossible to identify if any evidence of this old bridge survives.

Oxgang Roundabout

Immediately on the north bank of the river, the B8048 meets a small roundabout junction with Redbrae Road, which has approached along the north bank, while Waterside Road crosses the bridge from the south bank, and then continues eastwards on the north bank with the B8048. The roundabout also has a fourth arm, heading north along Lammermoor Road into a housing estate.
