Peartree Interchange

Peartree Interchange is a major junction on the northern edge of Oxford and forms the connection between the A34 and A40 although traffic travelling between the two routes has to use part of the A44.

History

There was no junction here until the A34 western bypass of Oxford was built in the early 1960s. The junction was originally a flat roundabout connecting the A34 and A43 with both routes TOTSOing at the roundabout. This was called Woodstock Roundabout.

The opening of the M40 in the early 1990s dramatically altered the major roads in the area. A flyover was built over the roundabout carrying the A34 northwards on a new alignment to the M40. The former A34 to Chipping Norton was renumbered as A44. The A43 no longer reaches this far south and the short section from Peartree Interchange to Kidlington was renumbered as A4260 and joins the A44 at a new junction called Loop Farm Roundabout.

The Woodstock Roundabout then became known as Peartree Hill Roundabout, although from the A34 it is better known as 'Peartree Interchange'.
