The Penllegaer Interchange, junction 47 of the M4, was built in 1977 as part of the M4 Pontardulais bypass contract. It is a grade separated roundabout situated above the M4 and is junction 47 of that road.

History

Prior to construction of the M4, the A48, A483 and A484 met at a roundabout about 400m south west of the interchange, with the A48 taking the northern and eastern arms, the A483 the southern arm, and the A484 the western arm. As part of the M4 works, the A483 was diverted to the east of Penllegaer to the new interchange site, and the remaining southern stub was downgraded to unclassified status.

The Penllegaer interchange roundabout lies to the north of the orignal line of the A48, which can be identified clearly in Google aerial photography. Whilst the bridges over the line of the new motorway were being built, eastbound A48 traffic was diverted down the westbound on-slip, across the line of the new motorway, up the eastbound off-slip, round the far side of the roundabout, then making another trip down and up the east facing slip roads before rejoining the line of the A48.

The Swansea West service area on the north side of the roundabout was built many years later than the rest of the interchange.
