Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia, with a current population of just over 1.5 million. It is, however, still expanding and the city's population is expected to grow to ust over two million by the end of the decade. As a result, there has been a concerted programme to provide improved infrastructure, the roads aspect of which is discussed below.

Rather curiously, many of the road signs in this city are in English only. Thus one gets signs to the e.g Royal Palace, Russian Market and Olympic Stadium (a stadium financed by the IOC), without any equivalent signage in Khmer.

There is an ambitious road building programme in place, including new bridges over the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers, 3 new bridges over the Bassac Channel to the new Diamond Island development in the SE of the city and a tunnel under the Tonle Sap to the new Chruoy Changvar project across the river from the city centre. In addition, numerous flyovers (e.g at Monivong Bridge and at the Kampuchea Krom/St.271 junction) and underpasses (e.g the Monivong, Norodom and Monireth Boulevard projects) on the N1, N2 and N3 are also under construction.
