Pitreavie Roundabout lies at the western end of the short A823(M) spur motorway from the M90 at Rosyth. That it was originally intended to be something much bigger is evident from its large size and the wide flaring on the A823(M)s approach. The plan appears to have been to build a northern bypass for Rosyth by extending the A823(M), albeit not necessarily as a motorway, west to meet the A985, but as with so many similar plans from the 1960s, it was never done.
Today, then, the roundabout is a large irregular oval where three different roads all terminate, one a motorway, one an A road and one a B road, which is quite remarkable in itself. The A823 runs north into Dunfermline, while the B980 runs south to Rosyth. A fourth, unclassified road, Castle Drive serves a business park to the north east.
