Poets Corner is a roundabout in the Small Heath district of Central Birmingham. The island opened in the mid 1980's when the D2 Small Heath Highway section of the A45 was opened to try and alleviate the chronic traffic jams that used to occur on its old alignment slightly to the north (S2 section of Coventry Road). The junction was built to allow an underpass for the A45 to be added at a later date but this never happened.
Improvements were made in 2012 which widened the A45 approaches to three lanes. Further improvements were carried out in 2021 which added bus lanes to almost the whole length of the Small Heath Highway.
There is a large Muslim population in the district, consequently there are a lot of mosques in the immediate area including one just off the island itself.
