A roundabout built over the Afon Gwili, Pont Abraham Interchange is junction 49 of the M4 and the westbound end and eastbound beginning of the motorway. It is also the highest junction number on any road in Britain beginning with an M.
The roundabout was built in 1977 on the A48. As part of the M4 contract, the A48 was dualled northwards for about 800 m - this has subsequently been extended as part of the Cross Hands bypass. The A483 connection was also built in 1977, replacing the original route into the middle of Pontarddulais, which is now the B4297.
The Pont Abraham Motorway Service Area was opened in 1983.
