Preston Roundabout

Preston Roundabout marks the northern end of the A92 dual carriageway which has run from the M90 at Dunfermline past Kirkcaldy to Glenrothes. From here to the Tay Road Bridge approach, however, it is only single carriageway, reflecting the lower traffic volumes using the route. The dual carriageway on the A92 may end here, but heading west, the A911 is dualled into the town centre. The junction is a 5-arm junction, with the north south A92 crossing the east-west A911. There is also an unclassified road leading off south east, and this quickly picks up the former line of the A92, which followed Woodside Way prior to the new town development.

As with many of the roads in Glenrothes, it seems likely that there were originally grander plans for this junction. Until quite recently, there was no development encroaching on the junction, and it is quite feasible to imagine a grade separated roundabout here, with a dualled A92 passing through underneath. However, unlike Bankhead Roundabout to the south, the junction was not built with that in mind, suggesting that plans changed rapidly as the town's road network developed.

Indeed, the original proposal was for a GSJ. Early plans show a three level stacked roundabout with both the A92 and A911 passing uninterrupted through the junction. This was later watered down to a standard roundabout interchange with the A92 in an underpass. By the time construction started this was further watered down to a plain roundabout.
