The 'Princes Tunnel' is a pair of Tunnels built as part of the works for the first Dartford bypass. The Tunnels were the earliest part of the bypass built as at this point the road has to climb between the A225 and the locally named Darenth Road. The road at this point is on an embankment so a small temporary railway was used to build it. From the roadside you can't see the river at all these days
The Tunnels themselves are made of a mixture of wooden beams mated to a typical brick arch. It is designed so when the river rises in floods, it doesn't flood the surrounding area.
In the late 00's the western bore was converted from a waterway to be used by pedestrians. Forming a part of the Darent Valley Path, it allowed during daylight hours a safer way to walk the walkway away from the busy road above. It was formally opened in 2009.
