The R257 follows the coast of Gaoth Dobhair (Gweedore) in northwest Donegal from An Ardaidh Mhór, close to Gort an Choirce (Gortahork) on the N56, via the area known as Cnoc Fola (The Bloody Foreland) before rejoining the N56 at Dobhar, 1 km north of Croithlí (Crolly).
The road was originally part of the T72. When the modern road numbering system was introduced in 1977, the N56 ran further inland on what was the L130.
