The R420 runs from Killinure in County Laois, southwest of Monasterevin in County Kildare, to Bawnoges, east of Moate in County Westmeath, by way of Tullamore in County Offaly.
The road roughly follows the intercity rail route from Portalington to Athlone (and, by extension, Dublin Heuston to Galway), while the main driving route runs elsewhere.
The section from Tullamore to Moate was formerly the N80; this was downgraded when long-distance traffic was signed via the N52 and M6 instead.
