The R446 follows the major part of the old route of the N6 between Kinnegad in County Westmeath and the city of Galway.
It starts as a 2-km-long southern bypass of Kinnegad, running west from a roundabout junction with the R148 at the southeastern end of the town's High Street in the townland of Rossan. It then rejoins the old alignment of Athlone Road at a second roundabout, from which a short spur leads south to Junction 2 of the M6. The road ends at a roundabout junction with the N67 and R338 close to Oranmore, some 9 km east of Galway city centre.
Throughout its length, the R446 is often signposted off the M6 as "Old N6", primarily because there are no services on the motorway, so that traffic has to divert into towns along the old road for fuel and other facilities.
