The R852 runs from the Boreenmanna Road junction with the South City Link (N27), about 1.5 km southeast of Cork city centre to junction 10 of the N40 at Ballinure. It starts through quiet suburban South Cork before ending at one of Cork's largest retail and commercial parks around Mahon Point, where traffic jams are regular during the daytime.
The R852 starts at a traffic light controlled junction with the N27, although vehicles heading northbound on the N27 cannot turn right onto this road. We continue eastbound past the Ford Ireland head office and Pairc Ui Rinn, the temporary home of the Cork GAA. We then turn southbound onto Churchyard Lane, passing the Ballinlough Road and Silver Key pub on the right hand side. Then we meet the R853 at a traffic light controlled junction and then turn eastbound again onto Skehard Road.
Continuing through several sets of lights, we then turn right onto Mahon Point Road. Heading south along a tree lined avenue, the area becomes more industrial, passing the Central Statistics Office and then the City Gate office development. The last main sight along this route is the Mahon Point Shopping Centre and Retail Park. A few hundred metres ahead, the R852 ends at a traffic light controlled junction above the N40 South Ring Road. Ahead, the road turns into a L road where it goes to the Jacobs Island housing development.
During 2012 and 2013, the roundabout with the R853 plus some substandard road nearby was replaced and realigned. There are now 2 sets of traffic lights, plus 350m of bus lane heading towards the city and around 700m of cycle lane.
