Roscrea, a market town in the far north of County Tipperary, lies 65 km east-north-east of the city of Limerick and 100 km west-south-west of Dublin. Historically, the town is known for having been an intermediate point on one of Ireland's most ancient routes, an tSlí Dála ("the assembly way"), which connected Tara, seat of the high-kings of Ireland, to the estuary of the Shannon. The modern version of this is the N7 from Dublin to Limerick, the greatest part of which has now been designated as a motorway; the M7 today bypasses Roscrea on an alignment running some 3.5 km south of the town, with the old route through the centre now reclassified as part of the R445.
