The SH24 starts at a roundabout on SH27 in Matamata and heads east along a wide tree-lined dual carriageway parkway through the town centre. As with many rural New Zealand towns, many of the shops that line the road look more like the out-of-town warehouses we find in British retail parks and trading estates, including a tractor dealership! The dual carriageway comes to an end at another roundabout, and the road heads south east out of town past a large industrial area, and on through a landscape of large, flat fields. A slight dip crosses a meandering river, and then the route turns south.
Before long, a T junction is reached and the route TOTSOs right, with a slip lane for southbound traffic. Despite the hills ahead growing larger, the road continues through a largely flat landscape, dipping a little across another couple of rivers, before reaching its end on the SH29 to the east of Te Poi. This junction is also a TOTSO, giving the SH24 priority onto the southern arm of the SH29, and again with a sliproad, this time for northbound SH29 traffic.
