The SH76 runs across the south side of Christchurch on New Zealands South Island. The western end is currently being upgraded on a new alignment to motorway standard, which will mean that the majority of the route is motorway. The route currently starts on the SH1 in Islington and heads south east through Hornby South. At the second roundabout it becomes a motorway, heading east; This junction will be changed with the motorway extension and seems likely to only have east facing slips. It then curves around Canterbury Park, with one intermediate junction where it meets the SH73 and SH75.
At the next junction, the motorway ends and the route resumes as an urban dual carriageway, running east along Brougham Street, before turning south east along Opawa Street and Port Hills Road. The route comes to an end at a Trumpet Junction on the SH74, which is briefly dualled through the junction.
The new motorway section will start further west on SH1, at a fork junction, south of Templeton and meander eastwards, with one additional intermediate junction with Shands Road. It is being built as part of a project which includes the upgrading of SH1 to the south of the new fork, and as such the mainline appears to be between the southern arm of SH1 and SH76.
