Sayers Common Junction is a small junction with incomplete access between the A23 and B2118. There is only access for onto northbound and off southbound. There is the opposite access at the Hurstpierpoint junction 4KM south, which can be accessed by going down the B2118. Together both of these junctions give full access.
History
Pre 1930
The A23 ran North to South through Sayers common with a T junction to Strood's lane on the East side
1970s
Strood's Lane was renamed Mill Lane
1980s
A23 was realigned to the East side of Sayers Common and it became a D2. The old northern part of the A23 becomes a S2 road for access to properties and the northbound on-slip. The Southern part of the A23 becomes the B2118 and doesn't rejoin the A23, there is no northbound off-slip. A bridge was constructed across the new A23 to allow access along Mill Lane towards Burgess Hill (But there is no access to Burgess Hill but access south towards Hurstpierpoint. There is also a southbound off-slip from the A23 onto Mill Lane.
Future
For those heading north from Sayers Common or Hurstpierpoint it is a very important junction so it is unlikely to be removed for upgrades. However due to its close proximity to the Hickstead junction in the event of it becoming a motorway it is likely it would be removed and there would be better access to Hickstead junction.
