|Junctions related to the A629|
Shorehead Roundabout is a junction of the A62 Huddersfield Ring Road where it meets A629 Wakefield Road, and forms the south-eastern corner of the ring road. Despite having the name "Wakefield Road", the A629 ultimately leads to Rotherham and goes nowhere near Wakefield; the A642 for Wakefield branches off it near Tandem, on the outskirts of town.
It is very likely that the roundabout is not part of the original layout of the ring road, and was added at a later date to increase capacity. Evidence for this includes:
- lack of advance direction signs on the southbound approach indicating that the junction is a roundabout (the other two approaches have the appropriate ADSs);
- lane alignments on the southbound approach; if you approach from the middle lane, which gives you the option of either continuing straight ahead onto the ring road or turning into the right lane of Wakefield Road, the alignment directs you onto the ring road, and you have to swerve sharply to the left to join Wakefield Road;
- the apparent apathy or aversion towards roundabouts which was historically taken by highway planners in the area; the few roundabouts that exist in Huddersfield and Kirklees have mostly been built to accommodate new residential or industrial developments;
- the fact all the other junctions on the ring road were initially designed as signalised crossroads (apart from New North Road, which was built as a GSJ due to the large difference in elevation).
