Speed limits in both the UK and the Republic of Ireland are indicated by red-bordered circular signs displaying a number in black text on a white background.
In the UK, speeds are expressed in miles per hour, with the limits on the public highway ranging from 20 mph to 70 mph, in multiples of 10 mph: the only ones allowed by law.
Signs on private land are not subject to regulation and speed limit signs of all kinds can be seen, as well as DfT-style signs with limits sometimes set as low as 2 mph.
In the Republic of Ireland the limits are in kilometres per hour, with the same basic style being used as the UK, but with a different, thinner, font for the numerals and the addition of km/h under the number.
There are a variety of speed limits in use and so each sign will be dealt with individually:
- 20 mph limit
- 30 mph limit
- 40 mph limit
- 50 mph limit
- 60 mph limit
- 70 mph limit
- National speed limit (NSL)
